Pass/Fail Threshold Check
How It Works
This calculator shows you exactly how extra credit will change your grade using two different methods.
Method 1: Add to Earned Points
New Grade = (Earned Points + Extra Credit) / Total Possible x 100
Method 2: Add to Percentage
New Grade = Current Percentage + Extra Credit Percentage
The “Add to Earned Points” method treats extra credit as additional points earned on top of your regular work. The impact depends on the total possible points in the class — more possible points means each bonus point has less effect. The “Add to Percentage” method adds a flat percentage boost directly to your grade.
Frequently Asked Questions
Extra credit adds bonus points to your grade. There are two common methods: adding points to your earned total (your percentage is recalculated based on new earned/possible ratio) or adding a percentage directly to your current grade. The method your teacher uses determines how much extra credit helps.
Adding to earned points increases your numerator in the points earned/points possible fraction, then recalculates your percentage. Adding to percentage directly adds a flat percentage boost to your current grade. For example, 5 bonus points on a 500-point class adds 1%, but adding 5% directly to your grade is a much bigger boost.
Yes, in many cases extra credit can push your grade above 100%. However, some teachers cap grades at 100% or set a maximum letter grade of A+. Check with your instructor to understand their extra credit policy.
Use the pass/fail threshold section of this calculator. Enter your current grade and the passing threshold to see if you are passing. If not, the calculator shows how many extra credit points you need to reach the passing threshold.
