How It Works

This calculator uses a simple algebraic formula to determine the minimum score you need on your final exam to achieve your desired overall grade.

Formula:

Required = (Desired Grade - Current Grade x (1 - Final Weight)) / Final Weight

Example: If your current grade is 85%, the final is worth 30% of your grade, and you want a 90% in the class:

Required = (90 - 85 x (1 - 0.30)) / 0.30

Required = (90 - 85 x 0.70) / 0.30

Required = (90 - 59.5) / 0.30

Required = 30.5 / 0.30

Required = 101.7%

Frequently Asked Questions

The formula is: Required Score = (Desired Grade - Current Grade x (1 - Final Weight)) / Final Weight. For example, if your current grade is 85%, the final is worth 30%, and you want a 90%, the required score is (90 - 85 x 0.7) / 0.3 = 101.7%. This tells you the minimum score needed on your final exam.
If the required score is between 100% and 110%, it may still be possible if your professor offers extra credit on the final exam. If it is above 110%, the target grade is realistically not achievable through the final exam alone. Consider whether your professor offers other ways to boost your grade.
Check your school's learning management system (Canvas, Blackboard, etc.) for your current grade. Make sure to use the grade BEFORE the final is factored in. If you cannot find it, you can use our Grade Calculator to calculate it from your individual assignment scores.
Final exam weight is the percentage of your overall course grade that the final exam counts for. This is usually listed in your course syllabus. Common weights are 20%, 25%, 30%, or 40%. A higher weight means the final has more impact on your overall grade.
Yes! This calculator works for any exam that has a specific weight in your course grade. Just enter your current grade (before the exam), the exam's weight percentage, and your desired overall grade. The formula works the same way regardless of which exam it is.
